SecondRotation.com launches! Sell us your old gadget!

Monday, July 30th, 2007

I’ve been away for a while but it’s been with good reason. We’ve been working hard on launching www.secondrotation.com, and the company is really excited about starting it up.

Do you have an old digital camera, camcorder, GPS Device, Cell Phone, or MP3 Player that’s just collecting dust in your closet? Sell it to us.

Of course, we built the site out using the Ruby On Rails. It uses some cool open source projects like GBarcode and Shipping.

Launching SR.com has been a really fun project for me. It has been a great opportunity to refine not only my programming skillset and architectural ability, but also my XHTML and CSS skills. I think we’ve done a really good job of maximizing our capabilities with the Rails framework, and there’s a lot more in store architecturally.

The office has been buzzing with activity, we’ve picked up a lot of great press (Gizmodo, Yahoo, and CNet’s News.com). Perhaps the most most exciting exposure was Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht (Revision3) digging our site on CNET’s “Best of the Web Feature” (It’s about 34 minutes in)

What do you think of the site? I’d love to hear your feedback and the business would be all the better for it. Would you sell us your old electronics?

EBay launches EBay Innovate

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

I’m at the Ebay Developer conference and they just unveiled a new community for developers to showcase their projects.

What’s really cool is their development radar. It’s a community driven approach to evangelizing development. Basically, if you’re not technical and you’d like a widget that does something wild with your watch list or current auctions, you can post your idea at the radar and a developer can build it out. It has some Digg like functionality where users can add their own “demand” for already posted functionality.

What a great way to connect developers to the community that uses their tools. Its a mutually beneficial solution - users get their functionality and developers get their audience. Pretty smart.

There’s a huge push here to start driving buyers to the popular auction site - interesting stuff. The web really does give power to small teams - can you create the killer app that makes a mark on Ebay’s income statement?  If you can, they’re giving away a PS3.

Dev House Boston 2 Scheduled For June 24th

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

Well its that time of year again. Dev House Boston is now open for registration. Last year, I helped a team build a component that searches Amazon for album information via web services. Of course, we built it with Ruby on Rails.

It was a lot of fun and it was great to meet some local developers. If you have a project you’d like to hack around with, I highly suggest checking this event out. I’ll probably be messing around with some online shopping cart integration to start one of my e-commerce ideas (Shopify anyone?). Its a great day, so come on out and meet, greet, code, and learn.

WebCamp Boston

Friday, April 6th, 2007

So my Irish pride got the best of me and I missed last month’s BarCamp 2. Kyle pointed me toward WebCamp which is set to happen for June 16, 2007. I’m planning on attending. I hope to see you there. I really enjoyed BarCamp Manchester and I’ve been trying to make it to another “unconference.” They’re great, donation based get togethers with web professionals and other techies/entrepreneurs. I highly recommend checking one out if it’s well attended. I hope to see you there.

OneIn3 Event and The Second Glass

Saturday, March 10th, 2007

A new friend invited me to a networking event in the North End sponsored by Mayor Menino’s OneIn3. It was a great event at the Living Room - lots of younger people and cheap drinks :-). I met many interesting people.

One person of note was Tyler Balliet. He’s publishing a really innovative wine magazine called The Second Glass. It takes the formality out of wine tasting and enjoying wine - I think something that my generation can really appreciate. If you’re into wine with a sense of humor, I highly recommend checking out their site and magazine.
